The History of AC and DC Power

If you have a solar power system, you likely know that you need a solar inverter for it to function properly. A solar inverter’s job is to convert the DC power generated by your solar panels into AC power, the kind that most homes use to power lights, electronics, and appliances. But why are there different types of electrical currents? Why do homes use AC power instead of DC? Keep reading to learn more about the different types of electrical currents and how their differences impact your solar power system.

Origins of AC and DC Power

The first type of electricity to be used for commercial purposes was actually DC power. Direct current was championed by Thomas Edison—a name you might recognize—and his DC systems were used to power electrical lighting and other, newly invented electrical devices.

AC power, or alternating current, came onto the scene later and was championed by Nikola Tesla. (You probably recognize that last name as well, but he had no hand in developing the cars you know.) But why would Tesla bring another type of electricity onto the scene if Edison had already started using DC power successfully? Well, it offered a few advantages.

The Advantages of AC Power

The main reasons that Tesla championed AC power are the same as the reasons that have made AC the dominant type of electrical current in use today. While DC power travels in only one direction—hence the name “direct current”—AC power periodically changes direction—hence, “alternating current.” These periodic changes make it possible for electricity to be transmitted over longer distances. Additionally, the innovation of AC power reduced the amount of power lost while transmitting the electricity.

As you can imagine, these are both major advantages when trying to provide affordable electricity on a large scale. Because of it, AC power has become the current of choice when it comes to electrical wiring in homes around the world.

Uses of AC and DC Power

While AC won out in the “War of Currents” between Tesla and Edison, both power types have their uses to this day. Of course, AC power is the standard for both residential and commercial electrical applications in most scenarios. However, DC power is still commonly used in battery-powered devices and electronic circuits. DC is also what’s generated by solar panels and, if a battery bank is present, stored in solar batteries.

However, from there, your SolarEdge inverter is essential to making that power usable by the different electrical systems in your home, so that AC and DC currents can exist in harmony within your solar power system. Tesla and Edison would both be pleased.
