If you provide care for someone who uses a wheelchair, one of the important tasks you have to complete on a daily basis is transfers. Whether it’s from their bed and into their wheelchair, from a different seat, or into a bathtub or shower, transfers can be tricky and even dangerous if not done correctly. A ceiling lift can greatly improve the ease and safety of these transfers, but it’s still important to know how to use them correctly. Keep reading for some instructions on helping someone you care for transfer from their bed into their wheelchair using a ceiling lift.

Check the Area

First, it’s important to make sure that the area is clear and the equipment is functional. Remove any obstacles around the bed and wheelchair so that there is a clear space all around the area. Then, check the ceiling lift to ensure that the equipment and the sling are in good working condition. Inspect it for any signs of wear or damage.

Position Wheelchair and Sling

Next, position the wheelchair alongside the bed at a slight angle. Make sure to lock the wheels in place to prevent any rolling during the transfer. Prepare the sling by laying it flat on the bed. Ensure it is properly positioned to support your loved one’s head, back, and legs.

Move the Patient

Gently shift your loved one onto their side, away from you, so that their back is facing the edge of the bed. Slide the sling under their body, ensuring that the fabric is centered and smooth. Then, roll them back onto their back, onto the sling, and adjust the fabric as needed.

Attach the Sling to the Lift

Attach the sling straps to the lift’s hooks and clips. Make sure that the straps are securely fastened and evenly distributed to bear the person’s weight evenly and safely. Take a moment to verify that the sling is correctly positioned and that your loved one is comfortable. Adjust it if needed before engaging the lift.

Lift the Patient

Use the control panel to slowly raise your loved one off the bed. The lift should naturally move at a slow pace, so you can check the user’s comfort and the sling’s position along the way. Pause if needed for additional adjustments. Steadily guide the user towards the wheelchair, keeping a hand on the lift to keep the sling steady and prevent swaying.

Lower into the Chair

Carefully lower the user into the wheelchair. Ensure that they are properly seated with their hips back in the chair. Adjust if needed to ensure they are comfortable and positioned securely in the chair. Then, unclip the sling from the lift and slide it out from underneath their body.

If you care for someone who uses a wheelchair, look into ceiling lifts for wheelchair users to make transfers safer and easier.
