Minnie Mills' primary passion is acting, but her first love was beauty. Her mother has always given her skin-care advice, such as the need of wearing sunscreen, and makeup has always been her favourite way to bond with her sister. That's why when Joah Beauty approached her about collaborating, she said yes right away. "I just love makeup," Mills says to POPSUGAR. But, more importantly, collaborating with Joah seemed natural given the brand's Korean background. Mills' favourite beauty category is K-beauty, in particular. "My friends are always asking me what I'm wearing or what kind of makeup this is, and I'm always like, 'Oh, it's Korean.'"

Mills discusses how playing Shayla in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" affected her self-confidence, how the film made her a major lover of winged eyeliner, and a rundown of her favourite skin-care and beauty products.

Her mother was her first introduction to beauty.

Mills recalls her mother caring for her skin as a child. "This was before skin care really became a big trend," she explains. Masking was popular in her family, and her mother would occasionally prepare mixtures "with ingredients that you don't always find" for her and her sister to try.Her mother was a big believer in the need of proper skin care. "She's always telling me, 'You're born with this skin, and you have to take care of it,'" Mills explains. Mills acquired a solid sunscreen routine thanks to her far sooner than most. "I am so thankful right now because I have never missed a day of sunscreen in my life." The Beauty of Joseon Felief Sun Rice is her favourite.

Mills began experimenting with makeup as she grew older. "For me, it was very empowering and something that I did to control my image, accessorise, and have a little fun," she adds. "I'm new to fashion, but before I really got a handle on it, makeup was definitely my number one accessory."Her eyes immediately became her favourite aspect of the makeup, with sparkly shadows and bright eyeliner. That was evident in her character Shayla's makeup in "The Summer I Turned Pretty."

"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Shayla Made Her Feel Confident

Mills' performance as Shayla in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" had a long-lasting impact on her. "She gave me a lot of confidence," she explains. "She's the It girl who happens to be Asian." It's not something she struggles with; it's just who she is... "I carry that a lot more these days."Mills and the show's makeup artist worked hard to create Shayla's appearance, which was inspired by her own relationship with beauty. "I always like to define my eyes because it was something I grew up getting teased about and at first felt like I should be insecure about," Mills adds. "Becoming a source of empowerment for Shayla was critical."

That's how her character's defining look in the series became black winged eyeliner. "Shayla never appears on screen without winged eyeliner on," Mills explains. They called it her "layer of confidence."When Mills sat in the beauty chair every morning, the eyeliner let her harness Shayla's strong, confident aura and felt almost like armour. Mills is still sporting the look in her daily life. "It just reminds me of what an honour it was to play this character, who not only touched other people but also really touched me."

"Simple and Easy with a Fun Twist" is her makeup routine.

The rest of Mills' makeup regimen is "simple and easy with a fun twist." Her base products of choice are skin tints or a light foundation, and she'll occasionally blend her foundation with a little moisturiser to thin it out. Blush is one of her favourite products to experiment with, and she frequently layers it with a cream highlighter to really amp up the glow effect. The Joah Flamingo Garden Eyeshadow & Cheek Palette ($22) is one of her favourites."My makeup is never done without lashes," Mills explains. "If I only have one thing with me when I leave the house, it's voluminous, curled lashes." She collaborated with Joah to introduce the brand's new High Roller Mascara ($10), which has quickly become a fan favourite.

She maintains a straightforward skin care regimen.

You may imagine that Mill's daily routine is very loaded given that skin care was her first exposure to the beauty industry, but she tries to keep it straightforward. In the mornings, she only applies a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, and sunscreen. She claims, "I don't wash my face with face wash in the mornings. I simply wash it with water before using a toner.

Her evening regimen is a little more complicated. According to Mills, "I am very particular about how I remove my makeup." "I wear so much makeup when I do events or [am] on set, [it's] really, really important to get everything broken down and clean," the actor said. She like using the $50 Tatcha The Camellia Oil 2-in-1 Makeup Remover & Cleanser before removing all of the makeup with a soft cloth. She will wear a sleeping mask as the final step to deeply hydrate her dry skin. The Laneige Water Sleeping Mask with Squalane ($29) is one of her favourites.

She prefers to do makeup with her sister as a form of self-care.

Taking a lengthy bath or getting a massage spring to mind when people think about self-care. For Mills, doing her makeup with her sister is the ultimate kind of self-care, especially because they're both so busy and live so far apart. "When she's home and I'm home, we can just sit in the bathroom and do our makeup while catching up on life."
