What is a Knock Knee?

Also known as Genu Valgum, a knock knee is a condition in which the person has knees in an incorrect alignment. The condition can affect people of all ages. However, the condition is more common in women, it can also affect men. People suffering from this condition have knees bending inward and touching each other. In other words, we can say that knees knocking against each other. This is why the condition is called knock knees.

Now, this position of the legs put the outer side of the knees under extreme pressure while causing pain and damage over time. Genu Valgum affects both legs. However, in some cases, only one knee is affected.

Is having Knock Knees Normal?

Well, knocked knees are a normal part of the growth of most children. In some, it may be visible whereas in others it may not. As the child grows, knocked knees correct themselves and the child gains a normal structure.

Now, you might be wondering when knocked knees are normal, then why it is regarded as a syndrome. Let us make it clear. When knock knees persist beyond 6 years of age, it starts causing pain and other severe effects and the situation is called knock-knee syndrome.

What Are the Causes of Knock Knees?

Knock knees can occur because of trauma as well as non-traumatic causes that may include congenital causes or developmental defects. Sometimes, an infection may also cause knock knees. Here are some of the common causes of knock knees:

  • Knee arthritis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Malunions

Besides these causes, obesity may also be a cause of knock-knees because being overweight puts a lot of pressure on the knees, and over time, it can contribute to knock knees.

What Are the Symptoms of Knock Knees?

The most common symptom of knock knees is inward bending of both knees and separation of the person’s ankle. Besides this, pain is also a common symptom that affects the gait of the person. Here are some of the common symptoms associated with the condition:

  • Difficulty in walking

What is the Diagnosis for Knock Knees?

During the diagnosis, the healthcare service provider will review the patient’s medical history along with pre-existing health issues. A physical examination will also be performed as it will play a vital role in the correct diagnosis of the condition. To confirm the diagnosis, the orthopedic specialist will perform a standing alignment x-ray or EOS.

How are Knock Knees Treated?

Mild cases may be fixed using braces to reposition the knees. If this doesn’t work, the knee-realignment osteotomy is recommended. This is done to prevent or delay the requirement for knee replacement.

Now, if the condition has occurred because of any disease or infection, that will be addressed first before correcting knock-knees. Surgery may be recommended if the gradual correction of knock-knees does not occur.
