The festival's origins can be found in the Hindu mythology surrounding the sister of the demon King Hiranyakashayap and the female demon Holika.

Hiranyakashayap thought he was the supreme being and greater than all the gods. However, his son, Prahlad, chose to ascribe to the universe's preserver and protector, the god Vishnu. Hiranyakashayap had no choice but to accept Prahlad's decision to abandon his father. He and Holika planned to kill him.

Holika would carry Prahlad on her lap and throw him into a bonfire, a seemingly foolproof plan. Holika had an enchanted shawl that would shield her from the flames, ensuring her survival.

However, the strategy was unsuccessful. Holika perished because she was only protected from fire when she was alone; Prahlad was saved by Vishnu. Soon after, Hiranyakashayap was killed by Vishnu, and Prahlad was crowned king.

The story's lesson is that goodness always wins out over evil.

In present-day Holi celebrations, the night before Holi, known as Holika Dahan, is frequently used to recreate Holika's cremation by lighting bonfires. As a form of purification, some Hindus gather the ashes and smear them on their bodies.

The following day is Rangwali Holi, an all-day celebration during which participants smear and throw coloured powder on one another.
