Inauguration of Salineros Sculpture

A set of sculptures pays tribute to the salt workers in the Salinas de Janubio

The monument recognizes in a special way Francisco Padrón Viñas, a doctor from Yaiza who dedicated part of his life to the production of artisan sea salt

«In recognition of the salt workers of Janubio and Francisco Padrón Viñas (1921-2013) for their contribution to the cultural space of the Salinas de Janubio». This is the message on the plaque located at the foot of the sculpture set up in the Salinas de Janubio.  Playa De Janubio Lanzarote

The work, by the artist Cintia Machín Morín, represents a man and a woman who work in the salt flats next to a wheelbarrow full of salt and tools typical of the work. All this presented on a white base that emulates the space where they develop their work.

The monument, inaugurated last Friday by the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Dolores Corujo, has been carried out at the initiative of Carlos Padrón. This man represents the third generation of producers in the Salinas de Janubio, a space in which sea salt has been produced without interruption since the end of the 19th century.

Precisely the work carried out over more than a century by men and women of Lanzarote in their industry is what Carlos Padrón wanted to acknowledge. During the inauguration he highlighted that "the sculpture seeks to recognize the contribution made by many families in the production of sea salt by artisanal methods, which has made it possible to preserve these salt pans, which are the largest and most valuable in the Canary Islands."

Likewise, as the plaque itself says, the sculptural piece also pays tribute to Francisco Padrón Viñas, father of Carlos Padrón and a Yaiza doctor since 1949, who dedicated a large part of his life to the production of artisanal sea salt in Janubio.

Together with Corujo, the vice president of the Cabildo Jacobo Mediana, several councilors and the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, attended the event.
