The Wonder

Sebastián Lelio, who won an Oscar, directed this not-quite-horror movie with a great performance by Florence Pugh. In 1862, Lib Wright (Pugh), an English nurse, is sent to Ireland to check on Anna O'Donnell, a girl who says she hasn't eaten in four months and has been living on "manna from heaven." Still sad about losing her own child, Lib is torn between looking into the medical impossibility and caring more and more about Anna. Faced with Anna's very religious family and a local community that doesn't trust her, Lib's watch turns into a scary, tense situation. The Wonder is a beautiful but dark period piece based on Emma Donoghue's book of the same name. It shows the terrible effects that blind religious faith and family secrets can have on people.

Klaus

When Jesper Johansson's father, the powerful Postmaster General, gives him the job of opening a new post office in the remote town of Smeerensburg, it seems impossible. The strange town is split between two clans that are at war, so the only thing people are likely to send each other is a cold look. But when Jesper meets Klaus, a grumpy woodsman who has spent his whole life making toys, he finds a way to bring the town together and starts a tradition at the same time. Most Christmas movies about Santa's origins are saccharine and full of schmaltzy sentimentality. Klaus, on the other hand, has a slightly darker tone, from the murky, run-down setting that reminds you of the unavoidable discomfort of A Series of Unfortunate Events to the fact that the jolly gift-giver started out as an intimidating figure. This, of course, makes it even more interesting for kids than the usual cheerful holiday fluff. This beautifully animated film won both a BAFTA and an Annie Award. It has a more mature tone and a lot of heart, making this almost otherworldly story a modern Christmas miracle.

Drifting Home

Kosuke and Natsume have been friends since they were young, but their friendship is getting tense as they get closer to their teenage years. When the apartment complex where they first met is going to be torn down, they sneak back in one last time to say goodbye. Instead, it starts to rain so hard that they and their friends can't get out. After the strange storm is over, the world has changed. The whole building is now floating on an ethereal sea, and there is a new child living with them.

This beautiful animated movie from the makers of A Whisker Away is about teenage feelings and magical realism (also available on UwatchFree and well worth your time). Director Hiroyasa Ishida (Penguin Highway) may not be as well-known in the West as Hayao Miyazaki, but you should know about him after seeing Drifting Home.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer) is a young German soldier who joins the army in the last year of the First World War. He is full of patriotism and dreams of glory on the battlefield. His romantic view of the war is shattered on his first night in the cold trenches, where he sees death and disaster all around him. The easy, meaningless death of a close friend is a tragic blow to his romantic view of the war. Erich Maria Remarque's groundbreaking novel, one of the most important pieces of anti-war literature of the 20th century, has been turned into a movie that is beautifully made. Paul's journey is about how he lost his innocence, how his naiveté was crushed by the relentless machine of war and state, and how politicians and generals chew up soldiers on the ground in their name. The version by director Edward Berger is the first to be filmed in German. This adds a layer of realism and makes for a blistering, heart-wrenching movie that shows how horrible and cruel war is. Even though it's often sad, this movie is brilliant.

Enola Holmes 2

The original Enola Holmes, which came out in 2020, was a surprising twist on the world's most famous detective. Instead of focusing on Sherlock Holmes, it was about his sister Enola, who was often forgotten. So, it's no surprise that this sequel is just as much fun as the first one. Even though she showed she was a good detective in the first movie, Enola has a hard time proving herself until a missing person report leads her to a case that even Sherlock can't solve and puts her in contact with his worst enemy, Moriarty. As the Holmes siblings, Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown and The Witcher's Henry Cavill bring snappy action, clever twists, and tense sibling rivalry to this movie. The 1888 Matchgirls' Strike is also a key part of Enola's latest adventure, which adds a touch of historical accuracy.

The Groundwork

Goreng (Iván Massagué) wakes up in a cell in a vertical prison, where the only way to get food is from a platform that moves down one level at a time, stopping only long enough for people to eat and then moving on to the next level. Even though there is enough food for everyone, the prisoners on the upper levels eat all of it, leaving those on the lower levels to starve. In Galder Gaztelu-tense Urrutia's Spanish thriller, there is just the right amount of violence, betrayal, and rebellion. The Platform is a mix of horror, dystopian sci-fi, and social commentary. It is a not-so-subtle critique of consumer culture and a stark look at how low people can go when they are desperate. It's not for everyone—scenes of cannibalism and suicide make it especially hard to watch in some places—but The Platform is one of the most visually striking and narratively provocative movies on Playtubes, thanks to its claustrophobic, brutalist setting and great acting from its cast.
