Cancun is one of the most popular beach vacation destinations in the world, but if you are not careful you could be spending a lot more money than you thought possible. The one thing that you have to keep in mind is that when you visit the Cancun area, you are also traveling to Mexico and that means that you should be able to save a lot of money. Here are a few tips that will help you save money when you are planning a trip to the Riviera Maya.

Taxi

Because Cancun is an international beach destination, the Taxi service at the airport can be really expensive. A taxi at an airport stand can be several hundred pesos and you simply do not have to spend that much. You can take a first class bus that will take you to the Cancun bus station, to Playa del Carmen or Tulum. If you are staying in Cancun, taking a cab from the bus station is secure and a lot cheaper. Taking an airport taxi is more convenient, but you could be paying 6 times more than what you would otherwise need to pay.

Forget Cancun Resorts

Unless you have found a great deal for your trip which includes a resort in Cancun you would do better to skip the resort area altogether. Resorts in the area can be as expensive as those you would find in Europe or the US. Instead take the bus to Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Isla Cancun Airport taxi where you will find some great Riviera Maya beaches at a portion of the price. A three and a half star hotel in Playa del Carmen or Tulum right by the beach can be found for 40 dollars a night or less. You do not even need a reservation most of the time because rooms seem to always be available. Reservations are needed only in the high season.

Pay In Pesos

It seems as if every business in the area accepts dollars and while that can be convenient, you should still pay with pesos as much as you can. The reason is that you are not likely to get a favorable exchange rate from stores or restaurants. Also be aware of the tourist price when you shop from street vendors. In some cases all you need to do is ask for the price and say that the price is too high to get a better price. But keep in mind that stores usually have a set price and the price negotiating only works with street vendors.
