Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa allows you to stay in Australia permanently, but it's not the same as citizenship. It also doesn't allow you to vote or get government benefits like Medicare, unemployment pay, or social security payments. 

But it does mean that you have permission to work and live in Australia and can sponsor your partner and children under 18 years of age to come and live with you here. You'll have the same rights as an Australian citizen, but you'll be subject to the same rules as everyone else living in Australia.

How to Apply for this Visa?

You can apply for this visa if you want to live and work in a regional area of Australia. You must have skills and qualifications on the relevant skilled occupation list and have been nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency. 

You must also meet other requirements, such as age, English language proficiency, and health and character checks. The first step is to lodge an expression of interest through Skill Select.

If your application meets all the criteria, it will be forwarded to a state or territory where you'll be invited to apply for the Skilled Regional Visa 887. After you've submitted your application, there will be a mandatory waiting period before your visa is granted. 

How do I choose my occupation?

When applying for a Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa, you must first choose an occupation on the Australian Government's skilled occupation list. 

This list is divided into two parts: 

  1. The Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) 
  2. The Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

Your occupation must be on either of these lists to be eligible for this visa.

What is the processing time?

The processing time for this visa is currently between 12 and 18 months. You can check the current processing times on the Department of Home Affairs website. The first step in applying for this visa is to have your skills assessed by an authorized body. 

Once assessed, you can submit an expression of interest through SkillSelect. If your expression of interest is selected, you will be invited to apply for the visa.

What is the list of Documents required?

To apply for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa, you'll need to provide:

  • A completed application form
  • Your passport or other travel documents
  • Two recent passport-style photographs of yourself
  • Evidence of your English language proficiency
  • A skills assessment from an approved skills assessment authority -Evidence that you have been offered a job in regional Australia and that the offer is with your occupation. The job must be on the Australian Government's Skilled Occupation List.
  • Documentation relating to any qualifications and experience relevant to your proposed occupation in regional Australia
  • Documentation shows a genuine need for a skilled person with your qualifications and experience in regional Australia.
  • Documents showing how much money you earn
  • Documents proving your employment history in the last five years, including details of where and when each position was held. You will also need evidence of any periods of unemployment during this time.
