Featured Literature: Commentary by Shri Lakkaraju Ananta Rama Rao on Valmiki Ramayana Recounts an Epic of Ancient India

New Delhi: Valmiki’s Ramayana has been translated in many languages since the dawn of civilization. However, nothing matches the precision and accuracy done by the Indian scholar Shri Lakkaraju Ananta Rama Rao. He has compiled a massive work in the field of epic historical/mythological study: Ramayana. The book is not a tell-a-tale account of Ramayana saga, neither a sholak-to-sholak translation. In all capacity, it is an evident commentary on the entire Ramayana. The work of Lakkaraju Ananta Rama Rao delves deep in the epic saga and draws a readable and accessible vividly honest account of all chapters through segments called Kandas.

Ravana and his

This work of commentary is classified in three volumes shedding light on important Kandas: Bala, Ayodhya, Aranya, Kishkindha, Sundara, Yuddha, and Uttara Kanda. The author vividly paints the splendor and opulence of courts of kings but also pays a special attention to pain and suffering of forest exile of lord Rama for fourteen years. The commentary often compares the wars, battles, and situations of Ram Rajya with Western sagas originating from Greek mythology. The objective of this combined volume is to augur the promotion of ancient Indian epics like Ramayana. It comes out that Valmiki’s Ramayana was guided and interfered by celestial powers and Gods from the universe as Lord Rama did realize his powers almost at the end of the epic.

In India, it’s a ritual to read epics like Ramayana and Mahabharat, thus, this volume must be read and enjoyed slowly like honoring the worshipping of god. In absolute conduct, Lakkaraju Ananta Rama Rao’s commentary is simple, clear, and close to of the original text.

“The translation admirably succeeds in pursuing its ‘twin goals of accuracy and readability.’  The closest thing [readers] could get to what the original taste and texture of the text must have been. This is a remarkable achievement.”
